This change will allow enhanced network capacity and speed as we expand our 4G and 5G services. Please note that as of the end of October, handsets that do not support 4G VoLTE will not function in Australia. What is 3G? Introduced in 1998, 3G (third generation) technology revolutionized mobile communications, allowing voice, text, and even video calls. However, with the advent of 4G in 2008 and now 5G, mobile technology has made significant advances, supporting faster speeds and new applications like streaming high-definition video and sophisticated augmented reality (AR) experiences. Why is 3G being phased out? The 3G network still functions but is being decommissioned to free up spectrum for more advanced 4G and 5G networks. This process helps optimize the use of the radio frequency spectrum, ensuring better service and coverage for newer technologies. How will this affect you? Devices solely reliant on 3G—including certain older mobile phones, EFTPOS machines, medical devices, and security systems—now no longer function and users are advised to upgrade to a supported device. Nationwide 3G Shutdown UPDATE: As of the 28th October 2024 the nationwide 3G shutdown is underway Need Help? Phone is 3G As the 3G network has shut down, phones that only support 3G will no longer work on Australian networks. Phone is 4/5G but no VoLTE Many phones manufactured overseas, while they may support 4G or 5G data connections, may still face issues with voice calls in Australia. This is often because these devices rely on 3G networks for voice calls, especially for emergency calls (like dialing 000). The government has mandated that the carriers block these devices for safety reasons. VoLTE but incompatible Although some overseas phones technically support VoLTE, their VoLTE versions might not be compatible with Aussie networks. Different countriews have varying VoLTE protocols and frequency requirements, meaning some of these won't be able to make voice calls over Aussie 4G networks. Which phones are impacted?
