If you're shopping for home internet in Australia, you've probably come across two main options: NBN and 5G home internet. Each has its own advantages, and the best choice depends on your lifestyle and needs.

Here’s a simple breakdown to help you decide!

What’s the Difference?

NBN is Australia’s fixed-line broadband network which runs through a mix of fiber optic cables, copper lines and satellite to deliver internet.

5G Home Internet uses mobile towers to deliver wireless internet. This is similar to how your mobile phone connects to the network.

1. Speed & Performance

  • NBN uses physical cables, which makes it more reliable in most conditions. It is less affected by weather or obstacles.

  • 5G can deliver very fast sspeeds, often above 200Mbps. Although performance is more prone to fluctuation depending on the network coverage in your area.

Good to know: If multiple people in your household are streaming, working or gaming at the same time, NBN is usually more reliable.

2. Reliability

  • NBN uses physical cables, which makes it more reliable in most conditions. It is less affected by weather or obstacles.

  • 5G is wireless, so it can be more sensitive to signal interference, particularly in areas with limited coverage or high demand.

3. Availability

  • NBN is already available in most parts of Australia, including many rural and regional areas.

  • 5G coverage is growing but is still mostly available in larger cities and metropolitan areas.

4. Ease of Setup

  • NBN has traditionally been associated with modem setup and configuration, especially if you're bringing your own device (BYO).

But at E.Tel, we’ve recently introduced an upgrade that makes things easier. Now, even if you're using your own modem, there is no need to configure it. You simply plug it in and get connected.

  • 5G is also simple to set up. Just plug in the modem, and you’re ready to go.

Both options are now easy and renter-friendly.

5. Flexibility & Contracts

  • E.Tel’s NBN plans are flexible. There are no lock-in contracts which means you can upgrade, downgrade or cancel whenever it suits you.

  • Most 5G providers also offer flexible options, although it’s still worth checking the details around data limits or usage policies.

So, Which One’s Right for You?
